Father Paul became Trinity’s tenth rector in the fall of 1998. Before that he served for ten years as the vicar of St. Hilda-St. Patrick’s in Edmonds. He also was associate rector at St. Andrew’s, Seattle, for two years. Before his ordination to the priesthood in 1981, he was a social service director and deputy administrator for the Snohomish County Corrections Department.
Father Paul’s managerial skills were put to the test in the aftermath of the 2002 earthquake. After dodging a falling stone, he launched a successful renovation effort which returned the sanctuary to its original beauty and provided improved parking for both members and visitors.
Besides his seminary education at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California, Father Paul has a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University and graduate studies in educational psychology at the University of Washington. He has a special interest in the work of C.G. Jung, and has served as board president of the Seattle Jung Society. He has also been a delegate to General Convention, a member of the Diocesan Standing Committee, and currently serves as board president of the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes.
Father Paul grew up in Eastern Washington on a wheat ranch. He is married to Kathie Deviny, an Olympia native, who was also an administrator for Snohomish County before retirement. They live in the Montlake area of Seattle with their cat and a few thousand books.
